Third Mission to Palestine

The Little Wings team completed its second trip to the West Bank from the 17.January to the 22. January 2009 at the New Jericho Hospital. The mission was organized jointly with the PCRF, a partnering organization based in Ramallah. The team of five included a Pediatric Surgeon Dr Jozef Bielek, Pediatric Orthopaedic Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Marc Sinclair and an Anesthetist Dr. David Sinclair, operating theater nurse Iveta Polakova and Eaoloin Culligan form the Little Wings Foundation.  On the first day a screening clinic with more than 100 children took place. Children with orthopaedic conditions such as hip and limb deformities, clubfeet and other birth injuries were examined and pre-selected for surgery. In addition we were able to screen children with surgical conditions such as urogenital malformations, hernias and hand deformities. With the new set of surgical instruments and a surgical drill acquired through generous support, complex surgeries were carried out in the very welcoming but austerely ill-equipped hospital in the Jordan valley. Approximately 25 children received surgical treatment in the following days. Most of the drugs and wound dressings needed were brought to Palestine by the team. Eaoloin Culligan was able to keep the little patients busy by instructing and helping them to paint friendly murals onto the grey walls of the pediatric ward. Future missions are planned for later this year.

Second Mission to Palestine

For a second time within a year The Little Wings Foundation and The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund have joined their efforts and organized a one week mission to Jericho with the purpose of screening and treating children with orthopaedic conditions. Facilitated by Steve Sosbee (PCRF) the team including Marc Sinclair (Orthopaedic Surgeon), David Sinclair (Anesthetist) and Gillian Beale (Operating nurse) were able to screen more than 50 children.19 children required surgery and were treated at the new Jericho Hospital during the one week mission. Conditions treated by the team included hip dislocation, clubfoot deformity, brachial plexus injuries, limb deformities after fractures and orthopaedic problems as a result of neuromuscular conditions. The estimated value of the medical services provided is approximately 200.000 AED (approx. 35.000 Euro). Several medical supply companies, individual Palestinian families in Dubai and hospitals in Germany donated most of the required implants and consumables for this mission.
